About PRL

PRL main campus is located in the western part of Ahmedabad in the Navragpura locality. The locality also contains many other premier Academic Institutions, such as, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA), Space Applications Centre (SAC), Sardar Patel Institute of Administration (SPIPA), Ahmedabad Textile Industrial Research Association (ATIRA) and Gujarat University.

Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), founded in 1947 by Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai, is a premier scientific institution under the Department of Space, Government of India. The current research activities of PRL are truly of multi-disciplinary nature at the cutting edge of science.

PRL currently has four campuses: the main campus at Navrangpura (FGRC-2023 Venue), Ahmedabad, with several world-class experimental and computing facilities; many leading laboratories in Thaltej campus, Ahmedabad; Optical and Infrared Observatory at Mount Abu, and Udaipur Solar Observatory at Udaipur. The research work done at PRL has been recognized by peers at both national and international levels. This is also reflected in International and national awards and honours received by PRL scientists over the years.

The research activities of the Geosciences Division focus on understanding the origin and evolution of the planet earth and its various components, with special emphasis on timescales and processes. The methodologies followed center on the measurements of abundances of elements, radioactive isotopes, ratios of radiogenic isotopes and thermal/optical luminescence properties of materials using modern analytical tools. The division houses a number of state-of-the-art analytical facilities including Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (AMS), Multi-collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (MC-ICPMS), Quadruple Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (Q-ICPMS), Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer (TIMS), Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer (IRMS) and High Resolution - Time of Flight - Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS).

The Division offers Ph D program in various fields of Earth Sciences including Nitrogen and Carbon Cycling in Marine And Terrestrial Environments, Isotope Hydrology and Hydrometeorology, Paleoclimate Studies, Marine Geochemistry,    Chemical Weathering, Paleomonsoon and Desertification on various time scales,    Spatial and Temporal evolution of various Landforms of India, Evolution of Proterozoic Sedimentary Basins of India, Subduction Zone Volcanism, Cryosphere Processes and Geochemistry and Characterization of Ambient Aerosols

How to Reach Venue
From Railway Station

PRL’s Navrangpura campus is situated around 7 km away from Ahmedabad Railway Station (Kalupur).  and journey by a three-wheeler (auto rickshaw) will cost around Rs. 200. Local buses (route 46, 47) also ply between the Railway Station and PRL and can take about an hour. The bus stand known as Kalupur Bus Stand is opposite to the Railway Station. The best landmark for reaching PRL is the Gujarat University Tower, which is adjacent to PRL.
